STATEMENT:
Creating Breeds Creating, chapter 9, by Susan D. Imus
I was honored to be invited to author a chapter in the
recently published book, Dance and Creativity within Dance/Movement Therapy:
International perspectives edited by Hilda Wengrower and Sharon Chaiklin.
I was one of six American dance/movement therapists amidst 26 authors who
contributed to the 19-chaptered publication. The book was launched through a
unique venue via Zoom with 188 attendees from 50 countries. The two editors
spoke first and then presented four international reviewers who were chosen for
their extensive publications, research and practice experience. The reviewers introduced
each author followed by their public reviews. Following their reviews, a
discussion ensued between the participants, editors, authors and reviewers.
Creating breeds creating is my belief about the choices of dance/movement
interventions within the therapeutic movement relationship. I call this
mechanism Aesthetic Mutuality. Aesthetic Mutuality includes development through
aesthetic sensitivity, aesthetic preferences, and aesthetic values. What we are
attracted to and what we are not attracted to within relationship assists us in
defining and identifying culture, the familiar from the unfamiliar and our
preferences and prejudices. Aesthetic Mutuality is one of nine fundamental
mechanisms that I describe in the chapter.
